Your Social Security card is a critical document. Some people think laminating it will help preserve this precious piece of paper. But the Social Security Administration is warning you not to do that.
According to AL.com, lamination can “prevent some of the card’s security features such as the blue marbleized paper designed to make it tamper-proof, embedded planchettes and raised printing.”
The agency also advises that you not carry your Social Security card with you. Most often, you don’t need the physical card, as it’s not a form of identification. Rather, you should consider using the digital Social Security number feature. It can be accessed through the “my Social Security” portal.
