Despite what people think, Social Security is not a welfare program.
Social Security was designed to help retirees by providing a source of income after they are no longer receiving a paycheck from their jobs.
The keyword there is “source” of income. Unfortunately, especially in today’s economic climate, many older Americans are retiring without a nest egg and are relying heavily, in some cases solely, on Social Security.
As The Motley Fool explains, Social Security is funded by payroll taxes. That means anyone who held a job and paid their taxes, provided they earned the required 40 credits, is entitled to receive Social Security benefits. A lot of people say that’s unfair. They think millionaires and billionaires should not receive benefits because they “don’t need it.”
Fair or not fair, no matter what you think, Social Security provides benefits to all who earned them.
Council of Seniors Wants to Support Older Americans
The Council of Seniors strives to help seniors. While we can’t increase your benefits, we can help you get all that you rightfully deserve.
That is why we are working diligently to get Congress to passThe SAVE Benefits Act. This crucial bill will put $581 back in retirees’ pockets to make up for Social Security cost-of-living adjustments that were far too low for years.
Sign our petition today to support our efforts. Congress has ignored the growing number of seniors expecting action for way too long.
