Scammers continue to prey on unsuspecting seniors. According to a news report by WALB in Albany, Georgia, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) says adults over 60 lost nearly $5 billion to fraud last year.
Don’t let yourself become part of that statistic. The FBI is warning seniors that the latest scam involves “using artificial intelligence to clone voices from social media clips to trick family members into sending money.”
That’s not the only trick scammers are using. The news station says other emerging ploys involve “smishing” (sending text messages about fake deliveries designed to steal personal information) and “juice jacking” (this is when public USB charging ports at airports and malls are used to steal data from connected devices).
As a reminder, experts advise against giving sensitive information over the phone and using public USB chargers.
Council of Seniors Wants Retirees to Get More Money
All of us at the Council of Seniors want to ensure all seniors get all the money they deserve — that means protecting them from scams and ensuring retirees receive their full Social Security benefits. We are working hard to get Congress to passThe SAVE Benefits Act. This crucial bill will put $581 back in seniors’ pockets to make up for Social Security cost-of-living adjustments that were far too low for years.
