Many older adults choose to age in place. With proper preparation, that’s a definite possibility.
An article by Hello Nation, the key is to “create a mobility-friendly home setup that encourages well-being and independence.” It offered expert advice from the owner of an in-home care service, who shared these design tips:
Reduce avoidable hazards. You can create a safer and more accessible living space by reducing trip and fall hazards. This can be done by removing or securing area rugs, using non-slip mats in the bathroom, and smoothing transitions between rooms. It’s also smart to improve visibility with better lighting in stairwells and bathrooms.
Improve stability. Consider adding grab bars near the bed as well as in the bathroom near the toilet and in the shower.
Maintain an open layout. You should adjust the furniture for better flow and to ensure easy access to key areas of the home. Decluttering is also important as it removes trip hazards.
By creating an accessible living space, you promote dignity, safety, and peace of mind for older adults, allowing them to age comfortably in place.
Your Retirement Should Be Easy and Worry-Free
Retirement should be enjoyable, not stressful. That’s why many seniors say they want to age in place. It’s also often more affordable, especially if your home is paid off.
Financial burdens stress many older Americans. We here at the Council of Seniors want to help eliminate that worry. We are dedicated to getting Congress to passThe SAVE Benefits Act. This legislation is crucial because the annual Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) has fallen short in recent years. If we succeed, the $581 withheld from seniors’ benefits will be returned.
Sign our petition today to support our efforts. Congress has ignored the growing number of seniors expecting action for way too long.
