As life expectancy continues to increase, researchers are becoming concerned about a future problem for seniors wanting to age in place. The growing number of people past age 80 could foreshadow a lack of affordable housing and needed access to services and amenities for seniors.

A study by the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies (JCHS) notes the number of households headed by someone 80 and older is expected to double between now and 2038.  In that 15-year period, elder-led households are projected to grow from 8.1 million to 17.5 million.

Researchers have examined how the cost and ability to age in place will rely on housing affordability and how local neighborhoods and communities will be able to provide seniors with services like transportation and healthcare.

Another factor is how seniors will function in homes that may require modification to meet their mobility needs. Community planners recognize they must involve older seniors in the discussion about how to create a sustainable future for those wanting to age in place.

Council of Seniors Wants Retirement to be Worry-Free

If you want to remain in your home, you should have the means to do so. That’s just one reason why Council of Seniors is totally committed to getting Congress to pass The SAVE Benefits Act. We need this bill to make up for inadequate Social Security cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) that have short-changed seniors in several recent years. If we succeed in getting it passed, the $581 that belonged in seniors’ benefits will be reimbursed.
