For seniors making the transition from home to assisted living, creating a safe, welcoming environment is key. U.S. News & World Report consulted interior design experts to get tips for making the new space feel like home

Here are their recommendations:

  • Imagine yourself living in the space.
  • Involve loved ones in the design details.
  • Remove potential fall hazards.
  • Promote a home-like environment.
  • Bring the outside in.
  • Include personal touches.
  • Organize to promote convenience.
  • Think about including a power recliner.
  • Make the bathroom safer.
  • Be mindful of electric cords.
  • Consider voice control technology.
  • Leave space to entertain.

Of course, all these elements should fit within the guidelines of the facility and what it permits. Take measurements to see what personal furniture might be allowed to be moved in. The importance of adding artwork, photos, personal furnishing like lamps, and mementos to stimulate fond memories is key.

Council of Seniors Wants to Make Senior Living Easier

Extra Social Security income can ease the transition to assisted living. That’s one reason why here at Council of Seniors, we’re fully committed to getting Congress to pass The SAVE Benefits Act. Inadequate Social Security cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) in past years withheld $581 from seniors. We want to see this money returned.

Please sign our petition right away! Let’s show Congress this bill should be a high priority.
