According to a report by WINK in Fort Myers, Florida, a lack of affordable housing has many retirees searching for roommates to help reduce costs. The Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida is trying to start a home share program, matching seniors with homes with those in need of housing.

Besides lessening housing costs, having a roommate might have an added benefit by providing companionship. A study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association shows that more than one-third of people ages 50 to 80 feel lonely, and nearly as many feel isolated.
