It seems the terms “grandma” and “grandpa” are falling out of favor among today’s active seniors. According to an article by Good Housekeeping, baby boomers are not “one size fits all,” so they are seeking alternatives to the traditional terms of endearment. Their nicknames may be “more influenced by one’s culture, religion, traditions, family names, inside jokes, and whims.”
While many families still use the traditional Grandma and Grandpa titles, along with similar names such as Grammy, Gramsie, Nana, or Grampy, Papa, Poppy, Pop Pop, and so on, an increasing number of grandparents are seeking fun, unique, and more youthful names such as Mimi or Gigi.
The article says some families are now making up names related to the grandparents’ first name, such as LeLe for Lisa, and others are opting to let the grandchild determine the name.
Council of Seniors is Here to Help Older Americans
The Council of Seniors wants to improve retirees’ health and wellness — and that starts with Congress enacting The SAVE Benefits Act. The passage of this bill can make up for Social Security cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) that have let you down in recent years. If it passes, $581 will be returned to eligible seniors.
