The population demographics are changing. For the first time in history, senior citizens outnumber young children. A New York Post article notes that worldwide there are now more people aged 65 and older than children 5 and under worldwide.
According to a new report by the U.S. Census Bureau, the United States is currently ranked as the 48th oldest country in the world, with 18.9 percent of its population aged 65 or older. That figure is expected to climb to 23.4 percent by 2060.
The trend is not unique to the United States. The article states that the “world’s total population is expected to rise from 8.13 billion to 10.23 billion by 2060, meaning one in five people on Earth will be over 65.”
This shows that Social Security is going to be more important than ever in coming years.
