Winter snowstorms can be especially challenging for seniors. The risk of falling increases when there are snow and ice on the ground. Additionally, shoveling snow is a strenuous physical activity that might be too much for older adults. This is where the “Snow Angels” come in.
According to a report by WKOW in Madison, Wisconsin, NewBridge, a local nonprofit agency, has been running the Snow Angels program for the past 40 years. It matches a designated volunteer shoveler with an older adult in financial need for an entire season.
Many seniors experience social isolation during the winter months. The Snow Angels help with that as well.
In addition to providing the much-needed service of clearing snow from driveways and walkways so seniors can leave their homes, the volunteers provide companionship in many cases. The news feature said some Snow Angel matches have been together for years, with the volunteer becoming like a second family.
Council of Seniors Wants to Help Retirees This Winter – and All Year Long
The Council of Seniors also wants to help seniors in financial need. We are working hard to get Congress to passThe SAVE Benefits Act. This crucial bill will put $581 back in retirees’ pockets to make up for Social Security cost-of-living adjustments that were far too low for years.
Sign our petition today to support our efforts. Congress has ignored the growing number of seniors expecting action for way too long.
