People caring for senior relatives may notice a phenomenon called “Sundowning Syndrome” affecting their loved ones. This condition refers to the effect of seniors becoming more confused, agitated, or aggressive in the late afternoon and evening as the sun goes down. U.S. News & World Report explains that sundowning syndrome is common for as many as 60 percent of dementia patients and simply adds to the difficulty of caregiving.

Sundowning has several causes, including:

  1. Medications
  2. Changes in aging brains
  3. Disrupted circadian rhythms
  4. Sleep problems
  5. Chronic pain

The condition can be aggravated by both mental or physical exhaustion, unfamiliar surroundings, and increased stress. Because America has an aging population and increased longevity, the challenge will continue to grow for caregivers.

Extra Money Can Improve Senior Caregiving

Additional retirement income can help secure the care seniors need. That’s one reason why Council of Seniors is dedicated to getting Congress to pass The SAVE Benefits Act. The amount of $581 was withheld from seniors’ checks over the years due to insufficient cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs). If we can get this bill passed, that money will finally be returned.
