For seniors living in a more northern climate, where winter can pose safety risks, there are key steps to take to avoid problems during cold weather. Senior safety experts offer valuable tips on how to safely get through winter.

The biggest danger is icy sidewalks and roads, where a sudden slip can lead to serious injury.  That’s why having the right footwear is critical. Boots, overshoes, and shoes with good treads can help a lot. If you’re going outside, it’s also important to dress warmly in heavy socks, suitable clothing, a good coat, and a hat, gloves, and scarf to cover exposed areas.

Travel during winter depends on your vehicle being tuned up and equipped with the right tires for icy roads. Pay attention to weather alerts and times to avoid driving in bad weather.

Winter keeps more seniors indoors, where they could avoid feeling lonely and isolated. Make sure to prepare for possible power outages, with flashlights and battery-powered radios in good condition. Also, keep smoke and carbon monoxide detectors equipped with fresh batteries.

Better Benefits Are Important to Seniors

Here at Council of Seniors, we recognize getting Congress to pass The SAVE Benefits Act is more important than ever. We need this bill to make up for Social Security cost of living adjustments (COLAs) that have been too meager in a series of recent years. The amount of $581 was withheld from seniors, and the passage of this bill will get that money returned.

Please sign our petition and get friends and neighbors to help too! Working together we can show Congress the growing number of people supporting this bill.
