Back in 2020, 24/7 Wall Street ranked the 50 states by quality of life for seniors, based on income, health, education, and environment.

The “best” and “worst” states for quality of life for seniors focus on: the life expectancy for those 65 and older, the poverty rate for 65+, the number of 65+ with disabilities, median income, and the number of people 65+.

Those ranking in the five worst, beginning with the worst are: West Virginia, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama. Not surprisingly, all are very rural. Overlooked is the fact they offer a very reasonable cost of living.

The five top-ranking states are, from the best: Colorado, Maryland, Hawaii, New Hampshire, and Connecticut. Yet, they aren’t likely to be best for those on fixed incomes.

States that are typically viewed as the most popular havens for retirees winding up in the bottom 25 are: Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

How you define “quality of life” goes a long way toward deciding the right place to live. For some, weather plays a big factor along with the range of outdoor activities available, as well as access to cultural resources.

Council of Seniors Works to Make Retirement Easier

Here at Council of Seniors, we’re working tirelessly to get Congress to pass The SAVE Benefits Act to get seniors more financial security. Because the annual Social Security cost of living adjustment (COLA) was too low for years, this bill is urgently needed. Once passed, eligible seniors will recover the $581 that should have been paid all along.

We hope you will take time right now to sign our petition and show the growing support for this bill!
