When it comes to retirement, finding the right small city (under 100,000 population) with a suitable mix of cosmopolitan life with small-town charm can be the way to a great life. A recent study by AARP identified 10 locations that fit the bill.
Four are in New England. Burlington, Vermont, along Lake Champlain, and Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on the Atlantic Coast offer the right combination. Burlington offers small-town charm and an outdoor lifestyle. Portsmouth has nearby beaches and sits across a river from the Maine coast. Springfield, Massachusetts, and Lewiston, Maine, both sit along rivers.
Out West, Bellingham, Washington, on Puget Sound provides views of the Cascade Mountains. Corvallis, Oregon, is home to Oregon State University and has that college town atmosphere. Napa, California, sits in the heart of wine country.
For those seeking a Southern feel, Athens, Georgia, and Winchester, Virginia are ideal. Athens is home to the University of Georgia while Winchester sits in rolling horse country.
In the heartland, Bloomington, Indiana, is home to Indiana University. Like the other college towns, it offers a broad range of cultural activities along with boutique restaurants and shops.
