Older folks living alone must take steps to make their homes safer. The leading causes of death or serious injury resulting from falls because of reduced muscle strength or balance issues. Poor vision and improper use of medications also make seniors more vulnerable to trouble.

- Exercise to maintain muscle tone and strength to avoid balance problems.
- Store and use medications properly.
- Have ready access to emergency numbers such as first responders and poison control.
- Sign up for and wear an alarm device that alerts someone if you fall or become sick.
- Get an annual eye exam to discover possible vision issues.
- Consider alternative transportation if driving becomes a problem.
- Install secure handrails and good lighting on stairways.
- Have grab bars for showers, tubs, and toilet areas.
- Put nightlights in key pathways in the home.
- Store items on lower shelves to avoid the use of step ladders.
