As we age, we tend to experience more medical issues that require prescription medication to treat. A report by MSN said there is growing concern that America’s seniors are overmedicated. It cites an analysis of Medicare data that found one in six of the 46 million older Americans enrolled in Medicare’s drug program are prescribed eight or more medications.

What’s most concerning about this is not just the volume of pills being taken, but that, in many cases, different doctors are prescribing medicines without tracking what the patient is already taking. It’s important that you give your doctors a complete medical history, including a full list of all of the medicines you take, including any over-the-counter medications.

Electronic medical records should also help because they allow doctors to “view consolidated medical and medication histories” for patients and deliver “safer, more informed care.”

Council of Seniors Wants to Support Older Americans

The Council of Seniors strives to help seniors stay healthy, physically and financially.

We are working diligently to get Congress to passThe SAVE Benefits Act. This crucial bill will put $581 back in retirees’ pockets to make up for Social Security cost-of-living adjustments that were far too low for years.

Sign our petition today to support our efforts. Congress has ignored the growing number of seniors expecting action for way too long.
