Social Security benefits lift more people above the poverty line than any other program in the United States. According to a report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, without Social Security, 23.5 million more Americans would live below the poverty line — and the majority of those are retirees. Data shows that Social Security lifts nearly 17 million adults aged 65 and older out of poverty.
Even so, too many retirees struggle financially. Seniors’ buying power has not been able to keep up with inflation in recent years, despite Social Security’s annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). It’s easy to see why when you recognize that this year’s COLA equates to about $56 more per month.
Council of Seniors Wants Retirees to Enjoy the Retirement They Deserve
The Council of Seniors wants all seniors to be able to afford the retirement they rightfully deserve – and that means making sure retirees receive the money they should have gotten years ago. We are working hard to get Congress to passThe SAVE Benefits Act. This crucial bill will put $581 back in seniors’ pockets to make up for Social Security cost-of-living adjustments that were far too low for years.
