Friendships in one Michigan town look a little different. That’s because an intergenerational pen pal program is pairing students with seniors. According to The Sun Times News, the program matches seniors in Saline, Michigan, with elementary and high school students who exchange letters and meet at the end of the school year.
The article points out that writing letters is much more than putting words on paper; “It’s about making meaningful human connections across generations, building communication skills, and keeping alive the art of letter writing.”
Both sides benefit from the pen pal program. Students improve their communication and writing skills without the pressure of grades. The pen pal program also provides meaningful connection. This is important for seniors who often deal with loneliness, but also for the younger generation who can learn from their pen pals’ experiences and mentorship.
Council of Seniors is Here to Help Older Americans
Older Americans worked long and hard and deserve to live a comfortable retirement.
All of us here at the Council of Seniors want to improve retirees’ financial futures – and that starts with Congress enacting The SAVE Benefits Act. The passage of this bill can make up for Social Security cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) that have let you down in recent years. If it passes, $581 will be returned to eligible seniors.
