Millions of seniors fall victim to scams every year. One of the reasons scammers can take advantage of so many people is that they prey on fear and typically don’t give you time to process the information you are being told.
But that’s where the problem lies. A sense of urgency causes people to provide private information without realizing that it is a bad idea. According to an article in the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services newsletter, the best way to stop scams is simply to STOP.
It advises that if a call seems suspicious, you STOP. This stands for Slow Down, Test the Story, Observe Warning Signs, and Protect Your Information and Money.
Council of Seniors Wants Retirees to Get Their Full Benefits
All of us at the Council of Seniors want to ensure all seniors get all the money they deserve – that means protecting them from scams and ensuring retirees receive their full Social Security benefits. We are working with members of Congress to introduce the “Social Security Restitution Act.” It would provide an estimated $970 payment to every retired worker receiving Social Security benefits, to help offset years of inadequate cost-of-living adjustments
