Retirees who find it difficult to remain in their own home may opt to move to an assisted living facility. There, you can have your own living quarters, but share community and dining spaces with other residents. Assisted living has become more popular with seniors and provides a nice transition for them as they age. A Place For Mom has surveyed community partners and identified the states with the most affordable monthly costs for assisted living. A median price across all 50 states shows costs can run $4,810 monthly, which translates to an annual cost of $57,720.
Here are the 10 most affordable states, with monthly costs that range from $3,000 to $3,748:
- Missouri
- South Dakota
- North Dakota
- Kentucky
- Utah
- Mississippi
- Alabama
- Georgia
- South Carolina
- Louisiana
Not surprisingly, the least affordable states besides California can be found in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and New England. The most costly is Vermont, with a monthly average of $7,418.
We Want to Improve Senior Benefits
Added retirement income can help with assisted living. Here at Council of Seniors, we’re pushing hard to get Congress to pass The SAVE Benefits Act. You need this bill because of inadequate annual Social Security cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) that haven’t kept up with inflation recently. The amount of $581 was withheld from seniors’ checks, and it’s time for that money to be returned.
