As we move into the last of summer’s hottest days, seniors should recognize there are ways to save on energy costs and still take advantage of outdoor activity. Energy experts recommend these tips as ways to cut costs without sacrificing comfort.

When the temperature dips at night, you might be able to turn off the air conditioning and enjoy fresh air through open windows. When you do run the AC, make sure you’re changing the filter regularly to get the best performance from your air handler.

No one likes a hot kitchen in summer. Instead of using the oven, cook on your grill outside where you can get fresh air and sunshine. Grilling offers a lot of meal possibilities that you miss out on in colder weather.

If your yard and neighborhood allow it, hang up your laundry to dry in the fresh air and sunshine instead of running the dryer. Using your appliances more carefully will trim that energy bill.

With extended evenings, get outdoors and stop being a “couch potato.” Summer also is a good time to plan home improvement and garden projects for the fall when plants and products you need may go on sale.

Council of Seniors Wants Your Dollar to Go Farther

Extra income and energy savings can make retirement less stressful. That’s one reason why Council of Seniors is working hard to get Congress to pass The SAVE Benefits Act. We need this bill to make up for the Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) not received over a series of years. Once passed, seniors will be reimbursed the missing $581 that should have been included in the COLA.

Sign our petition without delay. Let’s work together to show Washington politicians how many people support this bill.
