Life changes such as divorce or the loss of a partner have spurred the growth of single-person households where someone may face the challenge of cooking only for themselves.

For seniors who’ve never had to cook before, it can be especially intimidating.

Cooking experts emphasize the importance of changing your attitude and embracing the notion that cooking can be fun. It should be undertaken with two important considerations: how to make it convenient and how to prepare meals that are good for your health. There are simple cooking tips you can adopt to make sure you satisfy both.

Here’s what to keep in mind:

  1. Plan your meals in advance, even weekly.
  2. Organize your recipes and shopping list.
  3. Always create a shopping list before going to the store.
  4. Schedule and plan your cooking time.
  5. Use your freezer to prepare quick meals.
  6. Make your meals enjoyable, something to look forward to.

It’s easy to find simple recipes that make cooking a manageable task and save you time and money in the long run. Planning meals in advance can make shopping a simpler and more cost-effective exercise.

Council of Seniors Wants Social Security to Provide More

Having additional retirement income can make cooking more enjoyable. Council of Seniors is working hard to get Congress to pass The SAVE Benefits Act. You need this bill because the Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) has short-changed seniors by the amount of $581. If we can get this bill passed, they’ll finally be reimbursed.

Take time now to sign our petition and get others to help too. We need more Americans to help us give Congress the wake-up call it needs on this issue.
