Social scientists have uncovered a surprising rise in the rate of divorce among Baby Boomers, those born between 1946 and 1964. This so-called “gray divorce” boom can be attributed to a number of factors. A study at Bowling Green State University in Ohio shows divorce rates going up for those 45 and older while declining for those under age 45.

When Baby Boomers were growing up in the 1950s, divorce was a rare event and frowned upon by society in general. It was considered taboo because marriage was a sacrament in all religions. Once Baby Boomers reached adulthood, divorce started to become more common and began losing its stigma.

In addition, more women entered the workforce and became more independent financially, thus having less need to stay in an unhappy marriage.

The rising divorce rate includes those leaving both first and subsequent marriages.

Council of Seniors Works to Strengthen Social Security

Additional retirement income will help seniors living alone. Here at Council of Seniors, we’re working tirelessly to get Congress to pass The SAVE Benefits Act. Because the annual Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) hasn’t always kept up with inflation, seniors have been shortchanged by the amount of $581. It’s time for this money to be returned to those who earned it.
