One of the toughest choices seniors face is whether to stay in their own home as they age, or move to a retirement community with other seniors. It can be tough to leave a home where you have spent a number of years or raised a family.

On the flip side, moving into a senior community might be more appealing, given the range of helpful key services and social activities to counteract loneliness.

Before deciding to permanently age in place, consider the range of retirement living possibilities and their price points compared to the costs of staying put. Be aware you may have to begin hiring cleaners, gardeners and other professionals to maintain your property and way of living. A likely increase in insurance and property taxes is another factor as well if you have a fixed income.

If you live alone, there are more risks and potential dangers to consider if immediate help isn’t readily available. But ultimately, the choice is up to you.

Extra Money Could Help You Remain at Home

You need all of the money that’s entitled to you in retirement in order to stay in your home. In an effort to help put money back in your pocket, Council of Seniors is working hard to get Congress to pass The SAVE Benefits Act. This bill is an effort to make up for the Social Security cost of living adjustment (COLA) not received for several years. If passed, it will give seniors back $581 to make up for the missing or low COLAs.

Please show your support for this bill by signing our petition. We can show politicians in Washington the grassroots support for this bill. We’ll greatly appreciate your involvement in returning this money to seniors.
