Older individuals get treated very differently around the world, depending on a country’s laws, culture, and languages. That’s one reason why 75 years ago, the United Nations General Assembly decided to create a Universal Declaration of Human Rights for Older Persons. It set aside October 1 each year to honor the world’s senior citizens. This day is deemed International Older Persons Day.
The focus of this year’s observance is to fulfill the promise of the Universal Declaration globally. There are three main areas of concentration to reach that goal:
- Increase knowledge and awareness of the Universal Declaration and what it aims to do.
- Look for ways to strengthen solidarity so people of all ages will work together for senior human rights.
- Promote activities to help maintain the independence of seniors around the world.
The United Nations also will shine a spotlight on violations of senior human rights and discriminatory practices that should be outlawed.
Senior Life Should Be Fulfilling
Enhanced retirement income will improve seniors’ lifestyles. That’s just one reason why here at Council of Seniors, we’re fully committed to getting Congress to pass The SAVE Benefits Act. We need this bill because the annual Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) has fallen short of what seniors deserve over a series of years. If it passes, the amount of $581 will be returned to eligible seniors.
Take time right now to sign our petition. Join other Americans in showing Washington politicians how many people support this bill.
