As part of its rankings for the Best States overall, U.S. News & World Report examines public safety data to determine the most dangerous states in America. The ratings are based on the amount of violent and property crime rates per 100,000 residents, as compiled by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Of course, the statistics can be influenced by factors such as population density, economic conditions, climate, and family cohesiveness. Here are 10 states rated the most dangerous in the country:
- New Mexico
- Louisiana
- Colorado
- Arkansas
- Washington
- Tennessee
- Alaska
- Oregon
- California
- Missouri
Despite the crime rates in these states, the country is managing well given the current economic conditions. Violent crime has dropped for two years in a row, with it being down 3 percent in 2022 compared to the first two years of the pandemic. Property crime did increase in 2022, but only for the first time in two decades. Some of the worst states did show crime rates per 100,000 above the national average.
Council of Seniors Works to Strengthen Social Security
More retirement income helps seniors maintain their overall security. That’s why here at Council of Seniors, we’re dedicated to getting Congress to pass The SAVE Benefits Act. You need this bill because the annual Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) has proved inadequate in recent years. If we succeed the amount of $581 will be returned to seniors.
