The media makes us think retired men are happiest when playing golf or chess. But a new study reported on by MSN found that men over the age of 67 get the most satisfaction out of continuing to work.

Researchers at the University of Haifa in Israel discovered that “men working full-time after retirement age reported higher life satisfaction and emotional wellbeing, regardless of job type, compared to those who stopped working.”

This seems to point to the thought that working contributes to older adults’ well-being because, in addition to the financial benefit, it provides social engagement, a source of identity, and self-esteem.

Council of Seniors Wants to Support Older Americans

For many older adults, working is necessary because they don’t have the financial freedom and retirement savings to retire. That’s especially true for the millions of retirees relying on Social Security.

The Council of Seniors is working diligently to get Congress to passThe SAVE Benefits Act. This crucial bill will put $581 back in retirees’ pockets to make up for Social Security cost-of-living adjustments that were far too low for years.
