The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) views loneliness as an epidemic for seniors. It estimates as many as 40 percent of seniors suffer from loneliness at one time or another.

The Arbor Company has listed 8 senior-oriented organizations that offer unique opportunities to get involved and meet new people:

  • AmeriCorps Seniors: Like the Peace Corps for younger Americans, this group matches willing seniors with volunteer opportunities that complement their skills and interests.
  • The Red Hat Society: Aimed for women 50 and older, Red Hat offers local fun activities to socialize.
  • AARP (American Association of Retired Persons): Local AARP chapters engage in educational and social events.
  • National Senior Games:  For those athletically active, NSG sponsors a wide range of competitions for seniors.
  • Audubon Society:  Local chapters arrange activities such as birdwatching, hiking, and visits to nature reserves.
  • Silver Sneakers:  Offered through Medicare plans, local gyms provide services specifically to help seniors to stay fit.
  • Book Clubs: A perennial favorite. Here like-minded readers get together to share favorites and provide reviews.
  • Garden Clubs:  Still eager to dig in the dirt, join others in garden activities in your community.

We’re Working Hard to Help You!

No matter how you spend your free time in retirement, you deserve all of the Social Security money that’s rightfully owed to you. Here at Council of Seniors, we’re dedicated to getting Congress to pass The SAVE Benefits Act. This legislation is necessary to make up for Social Security cost of living adjustments (COLAs) that haven’t kept up with inflation. The passage of this bill will put $581 back in seniors’ pockets.

Please sign our petition to help us show greedy politicians how important this bill is.
