As rising inflation puts increased pressure on retiree budgets, some may consider moving abroad to find a lower cost of living yet still desirable quality of life. U.S. News & World Report has found there are countries where expatriate Americans are living comfortably on $1,000 a month in expenses.

Of course, relocating abroad is for more adventurous retirees who are inclined to adapt to a new language, culture, and lifestyle. They also have to consider the travel costs involved, possible taxes, and securing the necessary visas.

Here are seven countries, in alphabetical order, that have become foreign havens for American retirees:

  1. Malaysia
  2. Mexico
  3. Panama
  4. Philippines
  5. Portugal
  6. Thailand
  7. Vietnam

Each offers the healthcare, infrastructure, and basic amenities needed to live comfortably for $1,000 monthly. Making the move will mean adjusting to a new culture, cuisine, and lifestyle, which could be quite different from everyday American life.

Retirement Should Be Affordable

You shouldn’t have a huge financial burden in retirement. That’s why here at Council of Seniors, we’re working tirelessly to get Congress to pass The SAVE Benefits Act. The annual Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) withheld the amount of $581 from seniors. It’s time for that money to be returned.
