Among government agencies perhaps none have a worse staffing crisis than the Social Security Administration (SSA). According to Government Executive magazine, agency workers are struggling under an increasing workload and deteriorating morale. Congress recognizes the issue and has authorized more than $700 million in new funding for fiscal 2023.

Through May, about 2,000 new employees have been hired to address workplace needs in field offices and teleservice centers.

New hires are making little over minimum wage and receive self-taught training to prepare them for their jobs. Many workers complain the training leaves them ill-prepared for the workload as more Baby Boomers retire. Some express the feeling they’re being set up to fail. Overall, SSA staffing levels are at a 25-year low as workers leave the stressful environment.

Council of Seniors Wants More Social Security Support for Seniors

More retirement income can ease your worries. That’s why Council of Seniors is dedicated to getting Congress to pass The SAVE Benefits Act. This legislation is designed to make up for annual Social Security cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) that haven’t kept up with inflation in recent years. If we succeed, seniors will be reimbursed the $581 they were shortchanged.

Signing our petition is the first step you can take to help. Congress needs a wake-up call about how many people support this bill.
