As seniors age, they might become isolated from others and lonely, which can lead to a range of health problems. Studies show that isolated individuals can suffer from strokes and heart disease or a decline in mental acuity.

This problem was exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic that led to less social interaction and, in some areas, complete shutdowns. Frontiers in Medicine has reported on a study done by the University of Montreal regarding virtual tours for seniors conducted by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

Researchers recruited a test group of 106 seniors aged 65 and up to participate in a three-month program to determine how virtual tours might benefit isolated seniors. Half the group attended a weekly virtual tour while the other half remained in a control group abstaining from cultural activity during the same period.

The weekly “Thursday at the Museum” tour lasted 45 minutes and was followed by a 15-minute Q&A session with the museum guide. Results showed participants demonstrated better mental health and less physical frailty.

Your Retirement Should be Enjoyable

Extra income can improve online access for seniors, which is just one reason why Council of Seniors believes Congress should act immediately to pass The SAVE Benefits Act. This bill can help make up for Social Security cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) that haven’t kept up with inflation in recent years. If we can succeed in getting it passed, eligible seniors will be reimbursed $581, which should have been included and paid all along.
