With growing concern about the financial climate, some retirees might consider moving overseas to lower their cost of living and find a more laid-back way of life.

International Living produces an Annual Global Retirement Index that rates possible retirement spots for those willing to venture abroad. The index is based on an analysis of a range of factors, including cost of living, climate, healthcare, ease of getting visas or residency, government benefits, ability to fit in, and level of development.

Here are the 12 countries, beginning with the best:

  • Panama
  • Costa Rica
  • Mexico
  • Portugal
  • Ecuador
  • Colombia
  • France
  • Malta
  • Spain
  • Uruguay
  • Thailand
  • Ireland

Interestingly, more than half (7) are Spanish-speaking, with almost half offering tropical climates. Those seeking a more historical atmosphere will find Spain, France, and Ireland welcoming. All 12 countries already have gained favor with American expatriates.

Council of Seniors Wants to Help Your Dollar Go Farther

Steady, reliable income makes retirement easier. Here at Council of Seniors, we’re focused on getting Congress to pass The SAVE Benefits Act. The annual Social Security cost of living adjustment (COLA) hasn’t always kept up with inflation. If this bill passes, the $581 missing from previous COLAs will be reimbursed to seniors.
