A major question seniors face is whether to remain in their homes or downsize.  Experts say about 51 percent of seniors aged 50 or more decide to move to smaller homes. Those who choose to stay put still face the task of decluttering.

What factors lead retirees to downsize? For many, it becomes a matter of cutting costs, simplifying their lifestyle, getting closer to family, accommodating medical needs, or seeking better weather.

Making the decision to downsize and leave familiar surroundings can be difficult. Motivating factors include having unused rooms and space, wanting to reduce yard maintenance, recognizing you have too much stuff, and realizing you have a lot of home equity that can be better used elsewhere.

Moving ahead actually requires careful thought and planning. The first big consideration is where you will go. If it means relocating to a new community or out of state, it’s best to set realistic goals and a timeline.

It also requires taking inventory of what you have and what you’re willing to give up. Approach this task with the thought of what you will gain, not what you will lose. Reach your destination will what you truly need.

Your Retirement Years Should Be Fulfilling

Here at Council of Seniors, we recognize seniors face some tough choices. That’s why we’re working hard to get Congress to pass The SAVE Benefits Act. This bill is necessary to make up for inadequate Social Security cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) that haven’t kept up with inflation. If it passes, eligible seniors will be reimbursed $581 in their benefits, money that’s belonged to them all along.

Please sign our petition without delay. Let’s work together to show Washington politicians they can’t ignore the growing number of Americans who support this bill.
