Most seniors are well aware of scams aimed at getting Social Security numbers and the importance of protecting that valuable piece of information. But you might not be as informed about thieves stealing Medicare numbers to commit healthcare fraud. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has issued a consumer alert to tell seniors to protect their Medicare numbers, too.

One common Medicare scam involves a caller asking an unwitting senior for his or her Medicare number to get a free piece of medical equipment, such as a back or knee brace. Other scammers may ask for the number to confirm your identity or offer to send you a free plastic Medicare card.

Of course, Medicare only issues paper cards, and that’s all you need to get care from your physician or hospital. Your doctor will order any medical equipment or device you need during an appointment. Anything offered by an unknown caller is simply a con job. If you suspect you may be a fraud victim, check your monthly statement for any double charges.

Council of Seniors Wants to Enhance Senior Living

Additional retirement income gives seniors more peace of mind. Here at Council of Seniors, we’re working diligently to get Congress to pass The SAVE Benefits Act. This legislation is vital because the annual Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) has been insufficient. If we succeed, you’ll recover the $581 that belonged in your benefit all along.

Signing our petition right away is a great way to start helping. Congress needs a wake-up call about the growing number of Americans expecting action.
