Healthy aging means being mindful of movement, meals and memories.
Older adults are encouraged to keep moving. Exercise is important to maintain a healthy weight. According to an article by the Dayton Daily News, the National Council on Aging estimates that nearly 40 percent of adults, age 60 and older, are obese, which can lead to serious health issues such as diabetes, sleep apnea, heart disease or high blood pressure.
The article says exercise is also beneficial to mental health, as it “helps release endorphins to combat stress, depression and anxiety.” Additionally, it promotes blood flow to the brain which helps with memory.
Along with exercise, seniors are encouraged to eat healthy. Experts recommend eating nutrient-dense food. Protein and fiber can help maintain muscle mass and aid digestion, both of which are important as we age. The article also reminds seniors to stay hydrated.
Lastly, stay connected. Social isolation is common for older adults. Exercise classes and hobbies are a great way to build a social network during retirement.
Council of Seniors Wants to Support Older Americans
The Council of Seniors strives to help seniors, especially those facing financial hardships.
We are working diligently to get Congress to passThe SAVE Benefits Act. This crucial bill will put $581 back in retirees’ pockets to make up for Social Security cost-of-living adjustments that were far too low for years.
Sign our petition today to support our efforts. Congress has ignored the growing number of seniors expecting action for way too long.
