Now that winter has arrived, seniors should think about how to handle such extremes as snow and ice. A little precaution and planning go a long way for everyone.

The Daily Athenian shared some good advice for how seniors can stay safe. One good tip is to stay inside when you can to avoid exposure and lessen your chance of a slip and fall.  Pay attention to weather reports and be sure to have a battery-powered radio in case your power goes out.

Stocking up on essential foods, household supplies, and pet food if needed is a good idea. Also, make sure you have your key medications. If you use a fireplace or woodstove, be sure to have plenty of wood on hand.

Those who have to go outside in frigid weather should wear the right clothing and gear such as boots. Use layers to bundle up because as you age, your metabolism slows and you don’t generate as much body heat.

Get help with snow and ice removal if you can. If you must do it yourself, exercise caution and be mindful of your balance. Finally, drive only when you have to and be alert for hazardous roads.

Extra Income Is Essential for Seniors

Here at Council of Seniors, we know Congress must pass The SAVE Benefits Act, given how much seniors are in need of extra income. This bill is needed because annual Social Security cost of living adjustments (COLA)s have fallen short in recent years, and $581 was never paid out. If this bill passes, seniors will get a check for the missing money.

Signing our petition today will show Congress how many people support this bill.
