Many people probably assume that Social Security is simply to help older Americans. Few may realize this government program offers not only some retirement security but also helps disabled workers and families whose main earners may have died.
The Center for Budget and Policy Priorities has published a report detailing 10 top facts about Social Security that underscore its critical importance in our society. Here’s what they want people to know and appreciate:
- Besides retirement income, it provides life insurance and disability income
- It’s a guaranteed benefit with built-in cost-of-living adjustments
- It provides retirement protection for nearly all Americans
- Its benefits are modest, and seniors also should have savings
- Children are helped through support for families
- It lifts many seniors above the poverty line
- It is the main source of income for about half of seniors
- It’s very important for people of color
- Women in particular are greatly helped by the program
- With modest changes, the program can be on sound financial footing
Council of Seniors Wants to Strengthen Social Security
Council of Seniors is working tirelessly to get Congress to pass The SAVE Benefits Act. With this bill, we can strengthen the Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) that hasn’t kept up with inflation over a series of years. If it passes, seniors will be reimbursed $581 in their benefits.
