Many people in retirement consider relocating to another state for a variety of factors, and one particular U.S. state apparently provides a better experience for seniors than others. Travel & Leisure reports Bankrate does an annual review of the 50 states and ranks them based on dozens of data points. The primary focus is affordability, climate, healthcare quality, and crime rate. The 2024 report places Delaware atop the ratings, moving up from second place in 2023. Here are the top five states according to their analysis:

  1. Delaware
  2. West Virginia
  3. Georgia
  4. South Carolina
  5. Missouri

The First State captured the top spot based on its temperature climate, affordable cost of living, and a significant population of those 62 and older. Also helping Delaware as a retirement haven is its friendly financial environment of no state or local sales tax, no taxes on Social Security benefits, low homeowners’ insurance, and reasonable property taxes.

At the other end of the spectrum are the worst five locations for retirement, based mostly on their high cost of living.

  1. Alaska
  2. New York
  3. Washington
  4. California
  5. North Dakota

Your Retirement Should Be Worry-Free

You should be able to live where you want in retirement. Council of Seniors has been working tirelessly to get Congress to pass The SAVE Benefits Act. Because the annual Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) has short-changed retirees in recent years, this legislation is critical. The amount of $581 was withheld from seniors, and it’s time for that money to be returned.

Signing our petition will get you started helping. Your support can make a real difference in returning this money to seniors.
