Those approaching retirement no doubt have an idealized vision of how it will be. Plenty of time for hobbies and travel, or more interactions with family and friends. However, things often don’t work out the way people expect. A study by Coventry Direct in 2021 revealed 26 percent of retirees don’t have the lifestyle they dreamed of.
What are the most common regrets retirees have after they leave work? Here are seven that stand out:
- Having all the financial eggs in one basket and not diversifying
- Failing to get professional financial help to plan for retirement
- Ignoring the effects of aging on physical and mental health
- Not envisioning how retirement would work on a daily basis
- Losing any sense of purpose or meaning like you had at work
- Limiting your circle of friends to those you worked with
- Not sharing retirement expectations with your spouse or partner
Retirement requires the ability to adjust as it goes on and not get stuck trying to meet your original expectations.
We Want Retirement to Be Fulfilling
Additional income can open the doors to new experiences. That’s one reason Council of Seniors is working hard to get Congress to pass The SAVE Benefits Act. Inadequate Social Security cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) from several recent years makes this bill a must. Once passed, you’ll eligible seniors will be reimbursed the $581 that was withheld.
