With more free time on their hands, some seniors may decide it would be worthwhile to volunteer at an animal shelter. There’s great satisfaction to be gained in caring for and helping animals that have been abandoned and are in need of a home. Shelters have a number of jobs that need to be done beyond walking dogs or tending to cats. Among the possibilities are:

  1. Office work
  2. Cleaning food dishes and water bowls
  3. Staffing adoption events
  4. Helping with cleaning and housekeeping
  5. Fostering animals

Most shelters have requirements about who they accept as volunteers. You can visit your local animal shelter or humane society to learn about volunteer opportunities and what’s involved in joining the staff. You also can get a first-hand look at the operation to see where you might fit in.

In general, shelters require volunteers to be physically fit and willing to commit a certain amount of time each week. You may have to undergo a background check and go through formal training before you can start.

You’re Entitled to Freedom in Retirement

At Council of Seniors, we recognize that Congress must pass The SAVE Benefits Act to give seniors more financial breathing room. The amount of $581 was withheld from seniors’ checks due to low annual Social Security cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs). If this bill passes, that money will be returned to deserving seniors.

Sign our petition right away and tell others to help too. Working together, we can convince Congress action is needed on this bill immediately.
