When it comes to retirement locales, California often isn’t on the list given its much-publicized high cost of living. As it turns out, there are communities that are actually affordable in the Golden State.
Here are the cities and towns topping the list:
- Sacramento
- Redding
- Eureka
- Rio Vista
- Palm Springs
- Oceanside
- Chico
- Riverside
- Grass Valley
The state capital of Sacramento is surprisingly affordable. It offers proximity to San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, and the wine country.
Those seeking a less urban lifestyle can find it in Redding, a northern California city along the banks of the Sacramento River with views of Mount Shasta. Also in the north is the coastal town of Eureka, where housing is very affordable and the historic downturn has charming Victorian houses. Rio Vista is a small town south of Sacramento along the Sacramento River that offers sport fishing and access to wine festivals in nearby Lodi.
Surprisingly, Palm Springs makes the list with affordable retirement communities that provide an active lifestyle. Those looking for a beach location can find a reasonable one in Oceanside just north of San Diego.
Also north of Sacramento is Chico, home to Chico State University and close to the outdoor activities of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Close to Los Angeles, Riverside is an affordable community at the western edge of the Mojave Desert. In the Sierra Nevada foothills, Grass Valley is a Gold Rush-era town with a historic downtown.
Council of Seniors Knows You Need All the Help You Can Get
With retirement comes the need to manage your money well. That’s why Council of Seniors works tirelessly to get Congress to pass The SAVE Benefits Act. Because the annual Social Security cost of living adjustment (COLA) doesn’t always keep up with inflation, this bill is a must. If it passes, seniors will be reimbursed for the $581 shortfall.
