We all recognize sleeping patterns can change over time. Sleep experts note our bodies go through hormonal changes as we age. We have less need for growth hormones that promote deep sleep so the body can repair itself. It produces less melatonin, which turns many of us into lighter sleepers prone to wake up at night.

So, what can we do to get a better night’s sleep as seniors? First, adjust your sleep pattern to fit your lifestyle in terms of when you go to bed and when you get up. Improve your bedtime habits. Shut off distracting electronics and sleep in a cool, dark, quiet room.

There are things you can do during the day as well. Manage your diet and exercise to promote better sleep. Avoid caffeine and sugary foods before bed. Try to maintain fitness, which helps release chemicals promoting restful sleep.

Council of Seniors Wants to Keep Seniors Healthy

Here at Council of Seniors, we’re working hard to get Congress to pass The SAVE Benefits Act. We want this bill so seniors won’t be stressed over their finances. It’s needed to make up for the Social Security cost of living adjustment (COLA) that hasn’t kept up with inflation in recent years. If it passes, eligible seniors will have $581 returned to them.
