The country is suffering through record-breaking summer heat, and people will notice the impact on their electric bills. Many have their air conditioning going full blast to get through the scorching dog days. Fox News reports there are ways you can save on your electric bill by understanding that electric utilities use higher rates to manage peak hours and keep the electric grid stable.

Here are seven ways you can be smarter about how you use electricity to keep your bill more manageable:

  1. Consciously use less energy when you can.
  2. Find out your utility’s peak hours and rates.
  3. Program your thermostat.
  4. Invest in “smart” plugs.
  5. Upgrade your appliances to improve efficiency.
  6. Switch to LED light bulbs.
  7. Consider solar panels if practical where you live.

Taking these small, easy steps may relieve the strain on your wallet. You probably made fun of your dad when he reminded you to turn off the lights. But even then, he knew how to save a buck or two.

Council of Seniors Wants Your Money to Go Farther

You can use extra retirement income to get more energy efficient. Here at Council of Seniors, we’re working hard to get Congress to pass The SAVE Benefits Act. You need this bill because the annual Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) hasn’t always kept up with inflation. Once passed, seniors will be reimbursed the $581 that should have been approved in prior COLAs all along.

Take time now to sign our petition. Get friends and neighbors to help too!  Let’s show Congress how many people want action now.
